here's a little tribute to our officers, Keith and Jimmy...
it was 8 May 2009, approximately 0830. the skies were sombre and the stars, glowing dully. the atmosphere was gloomy beyond description.
we gathered in a cosy room and listened as our sirs/ comrades/ friends gave their farewell speeches, each of us suppressing our emotions. insults and compliments were traded like shafts of arrows in a war.
'XXX has a mouth that's as big as KPE!'
'XXX is GG. Gentle Giant.'
'XXX's face very black in the morning.' erm, show me someone who looks happy?
'XXX should learn more about his radios' duh, who wants to learn about radios?
the light-hearted banter belied our true feelings. tears flowed, fast and heavy, as we celebrated their ORDs. we could barely control our emotions, those feelings that threaten to overwhelm. ahhh- finally, we are free-eeeeeee from them.

joking, just joking. we were truly sad that we have to part ways, but we all know that there will always be opportunities for us to gather again and reminisce about the past =)

ndpeeps: so, guys, how do you feel about having just ORDed?
jimmy: (raises left hand up) I feel that I've finally achieved my freedom. Time is a always a constraint while serving NS, resulting in a lot of things which cannot be done. Now that I'm ORDed, I manage my own time, I do the things which I really want to; I'm no longer being tied to something anymo-

keith: (interrupts) - my feelings, it's the same as those who ORDed, happy and excited. Happy in that I completed NS to the best of my ability and excited that a new chapter in my life is about to unfold!
ndpeeps: (nod heads) how did the army changed you? any new skills acquired? any lessons learned?
keith: (answers quickly) i realised that communications is very important to promote teamwork, understand the problems my men are facing and to explain unpopular decisions. Leading by example, and 'Care for Soldiers' are two vital skills too...
jimmy: (raises hand and waves it about violently) I learned to wake up at 0530, to force myself not to sleep even when I'm dead tired, do area cleaning almost everyday (as compared to once every 2 months in my current civilian world), guess all this should be under discipline.. I also learned to care more for the soldiers than to care for myself.. Hehe..

jimmy: (conspiratorial smile) Is it the event that happened at a certain place on a certain day? If yes, this moment you (Xiang Yeow) should know better than me... The day I part with my fellow colleges, men and sergeants during the ORD day... :)

keith: as a trainee, overseas training allowed me to realise and understand the capabilites of our Army. as an officer, i'm proud of my specialists and signallers who pushed themselves to their limits to achieve commendable results =D
ndpeeps: Any final advice for those who are still serving NS?
jimmy: (suddenly solemn) Like it or not, it's still 2 years of NS (although some is 1 yr 10 mths). Serve it... Rather than to "geng" through the whole of the 2 years, why not do something fulfilling?
keith: The Army gives everyone a different experience. Remember that the choice and decision you make today will dictate the life and attitude of you tomorrow.
