The pledge.
Remember the days, of reciting it in school...
There's always an inexplicable sense of pride whenever I recited the Pledge before the daily morning assemblies. I don't know why I feel the pride. In fact, I didn't even bother to understand why. It's just one of those fleeting feelings that people don't pause to examine, just appreciate that it is there before moving on.
The pledge is like a sacred monument, standing still, while the rest of us zoom past it, giving it only the slightest attention. One of the many things that we take for granted.
It's only now that I'm part of all these ndp preparations that I finally sit down and reflect on what the pledge means to me.
The pledge's actually an affirmation of my sense of belonging to Singapore. I guess I am proud to be a Singaporean. I could be born in countries where food and shelter are scarce, where people die from random gunshots and numerous natural disasters. I could be born in places where the governments and their policies are equally corrupted. But no, I am born on this tiny island set in the sea.
Count your blessings, people, count your blessings. The best we have to complain about are the lack of freedom of speech. The worse others have to complain about are death, decay and disasters. Doesn't this put our type of 'suffering' into perspective?
I'm not saying that the problems we are facing aren't real. I'm simply suggesting that others have problems with repercussions that we can't even begin to comprehend. So, let's stop complaining that much and take pride in and ownership of Singapore.
Initiate efforts to improve those sides of Singapore you don't particularly enjoy, solve the problems in whatever ways you can. Can't stand those rubbish left on the lawns of our parks? Then pick it up! Can't read about those people unwilling to give up their seats to the more needy without criticising them? Then volunteer yours the next time you see someone in greater need of your mrt seat!
Do pardon my youthful outburst. I'm just ANGRY that some people can't appreciate how truly lucky they are to be borned in Singapore. Let's all take pride in Singapore and recite the pledge with fervour.
And while it may be naive on my part, I would still wish that everyone would take some time to think about what the pledge and what Singapore means to them...
