Every year during NDP, we see those contingents marching together with impeccable timing and harmony. Perhaps we would pass some banal comments like, "Ahh, this part it's the same every year," or "Wa, their marching's not bad ah." Or some of us might just watch them march by and their parade fails to elicit much response from us. However, have we ever wondered what it's like to be in their shoes? No? Or was it just a fleeting thought.

Well, witnessing the Combined Mass Dress Rehearsal at Nee Soon Camp on Saturday was a veritable eye-opener. Imagine the sweltering heat of the sun, having a parched throat, you're drenched in sweat and your body's tired from all the repetitive motions. And it's a weekend while some of your friends are out there gallivanting and enjoying themselves. It's not so easy. The participants must really have the fortitude to focus on positive thoughts and chuck aside any discouraging thoughts. They all want to put up a good show, otherwise it'd be wasting their efforts.

Our blogging team sweating under the hot sun, lol!

My blogging team and I went around the parade square taking photos and interviewing the participants. And wow, we were sweating profusely already and feeling rather uncomfortable. That was just a drop of water in the ocean compared to what those people marching have been going through.

So what's it like to walk in their shoes? Why are they putting in so much effort into all this? Many reflected that they volunteered for this when they knew their school or organisation had been offered the opportunity. Snippets of the participants' tales and what they said:

"It's a once in a lifetime experience." (NSF)

"Yea, it's tough, but only for a short while. Next time when you look back, you'd laugh and say it's worth it". (NPCC participant)

"We are students so we don't get anything like off in return. But this is a rare chance for me so I'm happy to do it". (Saint John's participant)

"We've been rehearsing ever since March, and soon we'd be going down to the platform area for rehearsals. But I'm excited". (Singapore Girl Guide)

"Happy Birthday Singapore! I hope you really enjoy NDP this year!" (NCDCC Sergeant)

They truly are an optimistic and strong-willed bunch of people. Really inspiring. But nevertheless, they've admitted that the training is tough and draining, especially since it's on a weekly basis.

They are adamant people. They love the experience, they love their country.

It's a world of difference watching them march and being in their shoes. Next time we catch them marching, regardless of whether it's on tv or at the platform itself, let's spare a thought and some appreciation for these resolute people. They have really been through a lot of hard work. Trust me, if you've gone down to check out the rehearsals you'd understand somewhat.

We do have a lot to learn from these participants. For a start, if we choose to do something, lets do it well and not complain so much. This includes our daily tasks at work. After all, the participants remained undaunted as they endured all the hardship. They know it's all for a good cause. In Their Shoes: No Sweat Wasted, No Breath Lost in Vain.

Do check out an earlier post on former rehearsals in April at Nee Soon Camp if interested! =) Furthermore, do check back for upcoming posts on Mass Combined Rehearsals (after our various Media Events), especially those being held at the floating platoform!
